Lei Clijsters had an impressive career in Belgian football. The youth product of Opitter FC played more than 500 games and grew into a reliable and strong central defender at KV Mechelen and SK Tongeren, among others. At Malinwa he wore the captain's armband. With the Red Devils, he finished fourth at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico and in 1988 he won the Golden Boot.
In 1998, Clijsters was at the helm of Lommel SK for half a season. He immediately started European football in North Limburg after winning the League Cup the season before. Lommel eliminated Torpedo Kutaisi and then played a historic two-part against Werder Bremen.
After stints at KTH Diest, KV Mechelen, Patro Eisden and KSK Tongeren, among others, Clijsters died in early 2009 at the age of 52.
In recognition of his merits, Lei Clijsters has been nominated for a place in the Pro League Hall of Fame. You can vote until April 1 via the Pro League app. The winners will be honored on May 25 during the Pro League Awards.
