Robbie Neilson has signed a contract as assistant coach at Lommel SK. The Scotsman brings a wealth of experience to North Limburg: as a player he made almost 300 appearances in Scotland and England, and since 2014 he has clocked up a further 410 matches as a head coach—most of them with Heart of Midlothian FC. Over the past two years Neilson was head coach of the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the second tier of United States soccer.
“At the end of last season I spent a few days in Lommel,” Neilson begins. “I was hugely impressed by the professional environment and the talent in this squad. The conversations that followed were very positive, so I’m delighted to join the club. Together with the rest of the staff we’ll do everything we can to get the maximum out of this group.”
Robin Henkens can also now call himself an assistant coach of Lommel SK. He returns to the Soevereinstadion after ending his playing career there at the close of the 2023-2024 season, having made 248 appearances. Last season he served as assistant coach at Dutch side Roda JC Kerkrade. After one year across the border, Henkens is back to work for “his” Lommel SK in a coaching role.
This means he will once again be present at the Soevereinstadion next season—this time on the bench alongside head coach Lee Johnson. Henkens is looking forward to that moment: “After retiring and moving to the Netherlands, a return here was always in the back of my mind. I never dreamed it would happen so soon. I’m incredibly proud to be back and can’t wait to see everyone in Lommel again!”
